Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: To teach the ability to establish mass and energy balances in single/multiple units in continuous systems and in reacting/unreacting processes.
Course Content: Unit systems / Introduction to mass balances; general equation, continuous systems, process balancing / Mass balances in multiple systems (Molecular and atomic balances), Recycling and purge systems / Chemical reaction stoichiometry, Equivalence in reaction systems / Combustion reactions (calculations on wet and dry basis, theoretical and excess air) / Single phase systems (ideal gases, ideal gas mixtures) / Multiphase systems (Single component, Gas-Liquid systems, Adsorption) / Multiphase systems (Solid-Liquid solutions: solubility, saturation, crystallization, hydrate salts), Equilibrium between two liquids (dissolution in each other, phase diagrams, ternary phase systems, extraction) / Introduction to energy balances, Energy balances in non-reactive systems / Energy balances in reactive systems
