Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to acquire professional skills in pharmaceutical microbiology laboratory by showing the basic working principles and uses of the tools and devices in the microbiology laboratory, as well as the microbiological control of pharmaceutical products, air and water, diagnosis of isolated microorganisms, antibiotic susceptibility and antibiotic combination assays.
Course Content: 1. Why a Microbiology laboratory? Laboratory rules, introduction of tools and devices.
2. Preparing a slide preparation from the mouth and saliva, and examining the microscope with dry system objectives.
3. Examination of microorganisms after simple staining method with immersion objective of the microscope.
4. Gram staining method.
5. Culture Media and culture methods
6. Examination of blood smear preparation with Giemsa staining method.
7. Antibiotic susceptibility testing methods: Investigation susceptibility of bacteria to antibiotics by disc diffusion method.
8. Antibiotic combination tests against bacteria.
9. Examination of fungi by staining methods. / Hand hygiene control.
10. Examination of parasite preparations.
11. Microbiological examination of air and water.
12. Blood group determination
13. Biofilm formation test (demo) and some biofilm applications.
14. Microbiological control of sterile and non-sterile pharmaceutical products.

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Pharmacists who are open to scientific developments in pharmacy and related fields, who can combine their knowledge and creativity, and who contribute to society and industry in education, research, and practice, should be trained.
