Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: Main objective is to teach the fundamentals of organic chemistry, properties of functional groups and, evaluating the main chemical reactions. Main objective is to provide information about general tools used in organic chemistry, reaction systems, separation and purification methods, reaction design, setting up a chemical reaction, running a reaction and obtaining products.
Course Content: Introduction to organic chemistry, recognition and naming of functional groups, classification of organic compounds, their properties, preparation (synthesis) and reactions, spectral structure determination, qualitative determination.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Learning how to calculate a limiting reagent, yield, and percent yield
2) Learning how to maintain a detailed scientific notebook
3) Learning how to critically evaluate data collected to determine the identity, purity, and yield of products
4) Learning how to summarize findings in writing in a clear and concise manner
5) Having knowledge about general organic reaction set ups
6) Learning how to engage in safe laboratory practices handling laboratory glassware, equipment, and chemical reagents
7) Learning how to characterize organic molecules by qualitative analysis and physical and spectroscopic techniques including mp, bp, IR, NMR
8) Learning how to run organic reactions by applying appropriate methods
9) how to perform purification techniques, such as filtration, suction filtration and recrystallization.
