Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to improve the understanding of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation/Nursing/Audiology department students in medical biology and genetics concepts that will form the basis for clinical studies, to examine the molecular mechanisms of cellular functioning and to enable them to associate these mechanisms with diseases in case of disruption.
Course Content: This lesson; fundamentals of life: cell, basic chemical concepts in cell biology and biosynthesis, basic structure and functions of proteins, genetic material of the cell: DNA, chromosomes and genome, DNA replication and repair, RNA structure and transcription, genetic code and translation, control mechanisms of gene expression and cellular genetic switches, control mechanisms of gene expression, structure and function of cellular membranes and transport of small molecules in the cell membrane, intracellular compartments: organelles, intracellular compartments: organelles-II, intracellular compartments: organelles-III, transport of intracellular proteins and interorganelle vesicle traffic, endocytosis, exocytosis and membrane transport, cellular communication and signaling pathways -i, cellular communication and signaling pathways -ii, cytoskeleton and motor proteins, intercellular connections, cell adhesion and extracellular matrix, cell cycle, cell aging and death, basic concepts in medical genetics, mendelian and population genetics, inheritance principles of autosomal genetic diseases, genetic diseases related to sex chromosomes, gonosomal and autosomal chromosome disorders, prenatal testing and genetic counseling; Includes topics.
