Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The objective of this course is to teach the effects of physicochemical and structural properties on the activity; drug-receptor interactions, metabolism reactions and importance of metabolism reactions for drug development.
Course Content: This course contains the knowledge of rational drug design; physicochemical properties, solubility of drugs, ionization of drugs; chemical bonds in drug-receptor interactions; stereochemistry-biological activity relationship; steric factors ; drug metabolism; bioizosterism; structure-activity relationship; prodrug designing and synthesis.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) To be able to explain the distribution and ionization properties of drugs in the biological environment.
2) To be able to interpret the chemical bonds of drugs with targets
3) To be able to interpret the absorption processes of drugs.
4) Should be able to interpret the quantitative structure-activity relationship
5) Should have knowledge about the development methods of active compounds
6) To be able to interprete drug design
7) Should be able to know the chemical processes of drug metabolism
8) To be able to interpret the contribution of metabolism reactions to drug design in drug development processes.

5) Hammet equation applications
6) Evaluation of quantitative structure-activity relationship equation, QSAR equation evaluation
7) Biological membranes, drug targets, receptors and types of receptors
8) Midterm exam
9) Chemical bonds in drug-target interactions
10) Stereochemistry-biological activity relationship
11) Receptors, enzymes and nucleic acids as drug targets
12) Chemistry of drug metabolism
13) Metabolism, Phase-I reactions
14) Metabolism, Phase-II reactions
15) Design of prodrugs, hard drugs and soft drugs
