Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The course aims to introduce theories, the basic processes and strategies of simultaneous interpreting. The course proceeds with detailed explanations of techniques of simultaneous interpreting: knowledge and competencies required of a conference interpreter, terminological vocabulary in various areas, forming units of meaning and reformulation, simplification, omission, anticipation, explanation, numbers, how to deal with fast speakers, use of equipment, customer and booth etiquette. Practice is based on audiovisual materials on current topics.
Course Content: This course consists of simultaneous interpreting of various speeches on different topics, booth etiquette, stress management and strategies of coping with difficulties during simultaneous interpreting.

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Develop memory and retention skills
2) Acquire dual task skills including listening and producing the same message in the target language
3) Comprehend the basic points of the messages embedded in the conference speech text
4) Apply simultaneous interpreting strategies such as generalization, omission, chunking or paraphrasing
5) Develop skills to cope with stress and to cooperate with colleagues in the booth
