Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of this course is to show sociology students the approach of sociology to health and medical issues, to emphasize that there are different perspectives, and to emphasize the importance of social sciences on health, disease, illness, etc. To show how concepts such as are interpreted, to present how some symptoms specific to communities vary from culture to culture, to show how sociology looks theoretically and methodologically at whether health issues are universal or cultural phenomena.
Course Content: This lesson; Defining the concepts of health and sociology and defining the relationship between them, Basic concepts in health sociology and their history, Defining the social and biomedical model, Formation of medical knowledge and the limits of medicalization, Social determinants of health, the role of disease, Deviation and medicalization, Suicide and society, The concept of medicalization in the context of conflictual approach, Symbolic interactionism and disability Labeling and darmaturgy concepts, Habitus and social control (through the female body) in the context of post-structural post-modern approach, Gender and health sociology and feminist approaches, Violence against Women, Course Evaluation; Includes topics.
