Course Objectives: | To provide information about the properties and strength increasing mechanisms of metal, ceramic, plastic and composite materials used in industry. To teach how to select materials according to their usage areas, how to design materials and how to determine selection criteria. |
Course Content: | Introduction to engineering materials Iron - Carbon Phase Diagram Ferrous alloy Steel and cast iron standards, steel types Manufacturing (structural and case hardening steels, tempering and spring steels, nitriding, free-cutting and other structural steels, stainless steels) and Tool steels Cast irons (Cast iron with lamellar graphite, Cast iron with spherical, compact graphite, White and malleable cast iron) Non-ferrous alloys 1 (Al and its alloys, Ti and its alloy, Mg alloys) Non-ferrous alloys 2 (Cu, Ni, Zn and other non-ferrous metals and alloys) Polymers and plastics Composite materials Biomaterials, Material selection in industry |
The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Knows about iron and non-ferrous alloys, ceramics, plastics, composite materials and biomaterials used in engineering. 2) Learns the relationship between the properties of steel and cast iron and the standards used in engineering applications. 3) Gains knowledge on specific issues such as general properties, uses, heat treatment and formability of metal-based and non-metal materials. 4) Learns to define what is expected from materials in various industrial applications and to determine the necessary formation conditions. 5) Able to identify problems that may arise due to manufacturing and use of materials and offer solutions. |
