Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: Aims of the course are; student’s recognition of diseases basically, investigation of the structure and functions of organs and tissues systematically, having information about the structural and functional disorders of different systems of the human body, and developmental mechanisms of important and frequent diseases, and be able to correlate the pathogeneses and therapy methods of these diseases.
Course Content: In this course, functional and structural disorders of organs and systems are explained basically, supported by histologic, physiologic and biochemical knowledge. Examples of diseases which has the typical charecteristics of organs or systems are investigated together with their pathogenesis and clinical features, in relation with their therapies.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) 1. The student should be able to interpret the features of disease on case samples, with the knowledge of health and disease concept, etiology and pathogenesis of disease, cellular adaptation, immunopathology, inflammation and neoplasia
2) 2. The student should have the ability to correlate the pathogenesis and the clinical features of disease.
3) 3. The student should know the developmental mechanism of diseases of various systems and be able to make the differential diagnosis of the disesase wit this knowledge.
4) 4. The student should have the ability to correlate the aims of therapy with the tools of therapy.

Course Flow Plan

1) 1. Definition of pathology, basic concepts, definition of health and disease, structures and functions of the cells, tissues, organs and systems.
2) 2. Cell division, mitosis, adaptive changes, degenerative changes and cell death.
3) 3. Metabolism, signal pathways, receptors, homeostasis.
4) 4. Etiology and pathogenesis; developmental mechanisms and pracesses of diseases
5) 5. Disorders of liquids, electrolytes, acid and base balance and buffering systems.
6) 6. Protection mechanisms: Immune system, adaptive immunology, immunopathology, inflammation and repair.
7) 7. Cellular proliferation; benign tumors, cancer, biologic properties, carcinogenesis and carcinogenic agents, diagnosis and therapy of tumors.
