Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The purpose of this course is to inform pharmacy students on the basic concepts in pharmaceutical microbiology, the general characteristics of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites), the primary diseases they cause and their treatments, the use of beneficial microorganisms in industrial areas, antimicrobial substances (especially antibiotics, antiseptics, and disinfectants) and their effects; sterilization, antisepsis, disinfection methods evaluating current research about these topics.
Course Content: 1. Introduction to microbiology and its history and classification, microbiology laboratory
2. Morphology and cell structure of bacteria, microscopy, and staining methods
3. Effect of external environment on microorganisms, media, and cultivation methods
4. Sterilization and disinfection
5. Microorganism-host relationships
6. Metabolism of microorganisms
7. Bacterial genetics
8. Anaerobic bacteria
9. General characteristics of fungi
10. Introduction to virology
11. Parasitology
12. Antibiotics, antibiotic susceptibility assays
13. Biosafety in microbiology laboratories
14. Industrial Microorganisms, Pharmaceutical industry and sanitation
