Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Take the medical history of the adult patient and perform a complete physical examination. Manage patient evaluation before surgery and patient follow-up and care processes after surgery. Knows and applies the general rules of the operating room, sterilization, disinfection concepts, and behavior in sterile environments.
2) Recognize the critical patient in emergency surgery (such as acute abdomen, bleeding, shock, burns, trauma), and apply the principles of emergency treatment, resuscitation, and referral procedures.
3) List the differential diagnosis of common surgical diseases, plan diagnostic tests, and explain treatment approaches and surgical principles.
4) Evaluate the principles of fluid and electrolyte therapy, clinical nutrition principles, wound healing, and care processes in surgical patients with guidelines. Explain surgical diseases requiring early diagnosis and treatment, national screening programs, and preventive medicine practices.
5) Use appropriate resources to obtain evidence-based data in patient management and critically evaluate this information. Recognize the importance of interdisciplinary work and communication in the multidisciplinary approach to surgical diseases.
6) Explain the principles of working as a team in clinical settings. Apply precautions for personal and patient safety.

Course Flow Plan

1) Preoperative and postoperative care of surgical patients, basics and historical development of general surgery, fluid and electrolyte regulations, granulation, radiological evaluation, shock and trauma responses, nutrition, transplantation, intraabdominal infections, surgical infections, rational antibiotic use, acute abdomen, hernias
2) Abdominal trauma, gastrointestinal bleeding, vascular diseases of mesenteric origin, burns, parathyroid diseases, surgery in thyroid diseases, surgery in adrenal diseases, breast diseases, esophageal diseases, stomach tumors, obesity surgery, surgical ethics
3) Gastrointestinal obstructions, surgery in inflammatory bowel diseases, tumors of the colon and rectum, anorectal diseases, appendix diseases, liver tumors, periampullary tumors, acute pancreatitis, cystic diseases of the liver, critical case discussions in surgery
4) Internship exam
