Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: As Product Designers, we tend to focus more on the form and working mechanisms of the product we design; but design work actually demands so much more. Each and every design professional must create media products in order to communicate their ideas to other professionals in a targeted manner. These media products can be sketches, technical drawings or three dimensional models; and they can be digitally created visuals which is more common in today's professional grounds.
This class is aimed to teach students about that media creation process and how to sutructure meaning in a controlled manner.
Course Content: The students will gather knowledge around desing and branding processes, and then will put that knowledge to use by creating visuals for their own products.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) Becoming aware on how each visual element can convey meaning fragments.
2) Gathering knowledge about the importance of design and branding thoroughout human history
3) Becoming competent with semiology studies.

Course Flow Plan

1) What are design and branding? Definitions, etymological roots and history for each.
2) What is design thinking? Why do we do this job exactly?
3) Roots of language and meaning according to Saussure's perspective
4) Barthes' three levels of meaning (denotation, connotation, myth)
5) Analyzing advertisement visuals and films according to Barthes' method
6) Examining an event and dividing it to meaningful pieces according to Greimas' actant method
7) Student presentations and other examples
8) MIDTERM
9) Visual deconstruction examples
10) Visual deconstruction examples
