Course Purpose and Content

Course Objectives: The aim of the pathology course is for the student to recognize the diseases in general terms, to learn the structural and functional disorders that occur in tissues, organs and systems, as well as the causes, formation mechanisms, signs and symptoms of important diseases, and to establish the relationship between the pathogenesis of these diseases, and diagnosis and treatment methods.
Course Content: Pathology course includes the definition of pathology, its functions, the procedures of the pathology laboratory, etiology and pathogenesis of diseases, cell damage and death, adaptive changes, tissue fluids and circulatory disorders, immunopathology, inflammation and neoplasia.

Learning Outcomes

The students who have succeeded in this course;
1) To have the ability to explain terms related to pathology.
2) To be able to understand the tecniques used in pathology laboratory.
3) To be able to list the diseases and disorders that cause pathology.
4) To have the ability to understand the etiology and explain possible causes of disease
5) To have the ability to comment on possible causes of disease.
6) To be able to understand the pathogenesis of diseases.
7) To be able to understand the morphology of diseases and to describe the lesions that occur in certain diseases.
8) To have the ability to comment and make recommendations about the development of the disease.

Course Flow Plan

1) Definition of pathology, laboratory procedures, sub-branches, history. Lecture slides previously uploaded to the system and reference books.
2) Etiology of diseases; living organisms, physical factors: Burns, freezing. Lecture slides and reference books.
3) Phyisical factors: Radiation, atmospheric pressure changes. Lecture slides and reference books.
4) Mechanical trauma, chemical factors, other factors, pathogenesis. Lecture slides and reference books.
5) Adaptive changes; hyperplasia, hypertrophia, atrophy, metaplasia, cellular degeneration, different types of degeneration. Lecture slides and reference books.
6) Protein metabolism disorders and diseases, fat metabolism disorders and diseases. Lecture slides and reference books.
7) Carbohydrate metabolism diseases, pigment diseases. lecture slides and reference books.
8) Pathological calcification, heterotopic ossification, stone diseases, cell death; apoptosis, necrosis. somatic death. Lecture slides and reference books.
9) Circulation and body fluid disorders: Hyperemia, congestion, edema, thrombosis, embolism. Lecture slides and reference books.
10) Circulation and body fluid disorders: Ischemia, infarction, hypertension, bleeding (Hemorrhage), schock. Lecture slides and reference books.
11) Immunology and immunopathology Lecture slides and reference books.
12) Inflammation and tissue repair. Lecture slides and reference books.
13) Neoplasia: Definition, general characteristics, biological behavioral characteristics, nomenclature, epidemiology, hereditary cancers, acquired preneoplastic disorders, carcinogenic agents and carcinogenesis. Lecture slides and reference books.
14) Neoplasia: Fundamental changes towards malignancy, spread of cancer; invasion and metastasis, staging in cancer, structural features; macroscopy, microscopy, diagnosis and treatment. Lecture slides and reference books.
