Programme Profile

The main characteristic of the education at Istanbul Health and Technology University Faculty of Medicine is that the courses in Periods I, II, and III are given according to subjects rather than departments. In this education system called the integrated system, a specific subject, for example, the circulatory system, is addressed and basic medical sciences such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and clinical sciences related to this subject are taught in a certain order. In the first, second and third semesters of Istanbul Health and Technology University Faculty of Medicine, all laboratory studies of the students are carried out in multidisciplinary laboratories except for anatomical dissections. In the first, second, and third semesters of Istanbul Health and Technology University Faculty of Medicine, the "Good Medical Practices" program is implemented. The program aims to teach medical students to gain the skills and attitudes needed. Problem-Based Learning (PBL) sessions are also implemented. Students are taught mainly basic sciences in the first semester of medical education, and basic principles of normal human biology and microbiology in the second semester. In the third semester, systems, physiopathology, pathology, pharmacology and clinical sciences are discussed. The fourth and fifth semesters of medical education are devoted to clinical internships. In addition to work on patients, clinical training, and lectures, seminars are also held in the wards. The sixth year is the internship period before graduation. During this period, students prepare themselves for medicine by taking responsibility under the supervision of faculty members and specialists. The Faculty of Medicine program consists of 270 ECTS (75%) of compulsory courses, 88 ECTS (24.5%) of elective courses in the field, and 2 ECTS (0.5%) of elective courses outside the field. Out-of-field elective courses can be taken in the first semester of the first year.
